This being that we approach people as intrinsically valuable divine image bearers, and that their experiences and emotions seriously, as they are the authoritative texts on their lives. You acknowledge that their distress is real, and that Jesus and the community are in distress with them. Having established that they are heard and valued, help the recipient craft a narrative that subverts the negative decisive and spiritual cycles in their life, helping them deconstruct their internal dialog. The care giver can now aid them in crafting a new narrative about their life, identity, worth moving forward, giving them the tools to actively subvert the dysfunction that is causing them distress and putting them on a trajectory to reconnect with the love of God, the love of their community, and the love of self.
Not an easy book to read, but very worthwhile. I did a book review on this book (I am a chaplain) and I got 5655 words approximately for my book review. I kept it in detail because there was so much to glean from this book.

I am a pastor working in a health care setting and as such, pastoral care is my main function. I found the information to be a review for me and believe it would be very helpful to those seeking to find out about pastoral care in that context. The book could have been more expansive in the areas af pastoral care in the parish setting where you deal with the issues of divorce, abuseive behaviors for both selves and others and family and other personal issues.
