My review is colored by my own experience with the Trapp Family Singers whom I heard perform in Tacoma Washington in 1947, when I was eleven years old.The beginning chapter follows pretty much the beginning of The Sound of Music..... after that, it was a delightful and captivating story of making a new life in the United States in the 1940s and 1950s. As a child of German immigrants, i do so remember the experiences of my parents and their friends and how they adapted and made a good life for themselves in a new world with a new language and new ways.In 1976 I had the opportunity to see the Trapp family property in Stowe, Vermont. This book is worthwhile even if "old fashioned."
You will never look at the movie the same way again, and the truth is so much richer and rewarding than the Hollywood version of this story. An inspiring story of immigration, funny stories of learning English and American ways, plus Maria Augusta Trapp's unyielding faith in God and God's Will working in her life. I love her storytelling and simple words of wisdom like--"We learned the shocking truth that "home" isn't necessarily a certain spot on earth. It must be a place where you can feel at home, which means "free" to us."
Read this first and then read Agathe von Trapp's biography. I still love the von Trapps and the movie (which the family didn't like). It's just that Maria really paints a fuzzy warm picture. In direct contradiction to Agathe's take on things; Maria makes it sound like the children didn't know what music was until she came to them with her guitar. Agathe said there was a ton of music with her Mother and Father, they played multiple instruments and sang as a family.Captain von Trapp was a sweet, kind hearted man and father. Maria, on the other hand would have these volatile blow ups and then quickly get over it. From all the info I have been able to get, there was a lot of good that truly happened in that family. But Maria was domineering and driven. They created incredible music together and it seems they all loved doing that. They had their summer music camp for years......just amazing and wonderful.
Translated from German, I think the book loses the quality in the translation. I bought the book from reviews and because I loved Sound of Music...best part when she's dancing that folk dance with what's his name. I really looked on utube and , and those 2 dancing were the best i could find. Watching them dance brought tears to my eyes...but that's the movie. From a purely historical viewpoint the book was interesting, just the writing style wasn't what I like. If i could read it in German it might be different.
This is always an inspiring family to read about. If you ever have doubts about being a free American, read their story and/or watch the movie. It is a movie, but it also shows truths of how a country and people can fall. The older children knew the life and privilege they left behind, but their family had principles that were more important. Their father refused to work for the Nazis. Once they left Austria, they had almost nothing. They had to work and work hard to create a different life and they did! Their mother did not know the meaning of "give up!"
At the age of 36, my husband had not yet seen "The Sound of Music"...a Thanksgiving staple in my life since I can remember... After nine years ~ and continuing the tradition of watching the great classic musical every Thanksgiving ~ my husband is just enamored with the film... So much so that he would get online and research the actors and the movie...This book was a Christmas gift that satisfied so much curiosity for him in ways unforeseen upon purchasing... Within a month he finished the book (which is HUGE since he works 10 to 11 hour days). He loved reading the history of this family through Maria's eyes... As he told me, the movie only touches on a very small part of their lives...but the general premise is true...they're a singing family who really did have to skidaddle out of Austria right under the noses of the Nazi authorities...Here's one thing he told me that really stuck... The Von Trapp family didn't have much money when they got to the States (not going to spoil it so I won't state why). They didn't know where to settle for a little while when a friend had suggested building there...and the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Vermont is their actual former house...the one they built!! How cool is that?!?!?!?!!! Ahh...history... It's a beautiful thing :)If you like the musical...and are interested in learning more about the family's experience (after Maria's arrival) this is a fabulous book that cleverly tells "the rest of the story" :)
